The Styles of Roulette

The game of roulette is extremely popular because virtually anyone of gambling age can enjoy placing a wager. The game is just as popular in Europe and overseas countries as it is in the United States. However, the game is played slightly differently in Europe than it is in the United States.

The Two Wheels

When Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc brought the modern version of roulette to the United States, the wheel was set up as a single zero wheel. But unfortunately for the Blancs, this version of roulette didn’t gain popularity in the United States. Instead, the Americans opted to play the double zero roulette wheel. Thus, the two different styles of roulette were born.

The American style has the zero and double zero slots. The wheel also has 36 numbers in which the ball can drop. This style, of course, is called the American wheel. The French-or European-wheel has 36 numbers, as well. But this wheel has only a single zero slot.

While the differences in wheel style may not seem like such a big deal, it can affect the outcome of the game. The double zero, or American wheel, gives the house slightly more of an advantage than does the single zero version wheel. Certainly, though, the basic concepts of the game remain the same. Despite the slight differences in wheel style, roulette is still one of the easiest games to play because the concept is simple to understand. Although the house does have a slightly increased advantage with the American wheel, players may still make their wagers and place their bets the same as they would with the single zero wheel. Of course, making the five number bet of zero, double zero, one, two, and three is not possible.

Players who travel from the United States to Europe do need to be aware that the wheels will most likely be different overseas. That is something to keep in mind when placing your bets as you may want to rethink your chosen numbers, especially if you prefer to make five number bets.
